Algorithms will not take over the world

Algorithms will not take over the world

On September 6 2023, a Lectio Inuguralis of the Fondazione Romeo ed Enrica Invernizzi Chair in Computer Science assigned to Professor Luca Trevisan, director of the new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence Bocconi, took place in the Manfredini Lecture Hall at Bocconi.

Professor Trevisan engaged the audience in a fascinating journey through the evolving capabilities of algorithms and the potentially revolutionary impact they can have in crucial areas such as green technologies, medicine and automation.

The Lectio, with its insight into mathematical research aimed at understanding the benefits and limitations of algorithms in the digital age, captured the attention of a mixed audience made up of students, faculty and experts in the field.

The following speech by Salil Vadhan (Harvard University) offered interesting insights on the topic of Information Security and Privacy, explaining how cryptographers address the challenges of cybersecurity and data protection and demonstrate the absence of algorithms capable of breaching their systems.

The Lectio then concluded with a panel discussion moderated by ANSA journalist Enrica Battifoglia, during which the two professors answered questions about the future of computing, AI, and the ethics of new technologies.

The Fondazione Romeo and Enrica Invernizzi Chair in Computer Science is a significant award for Professor Luca Trevisan who, through his research, will contribute to the understanding of the challenges and opportunities of Computer Science, which is evolving more than ever today.
