Joint Purpose

In 2005 Bocconi University and Intesa Sanpaolo established the Intesa Sanpaolo Chair in Economics of Financial Regulation, assigned to Donato Masciandaro, Full Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of Economics. The establishment of the Chair foresaw well in advance what has been evident worldwide after the Great Recession of 2008: the need for profound reflection on the state of relations between monetary policy, financial supervision (micro and macroprudential) and regulation. In 2019, the Bocconi University and Intesa Sanpaolo's connection was further strengthened, transforming as the Chair changed from being fixed-term to endowed. The Chair's research is deeply intertwined with the initiatives of the Center for Applied Research on International Markets, Banking, Finance and Regulation, where a specific research unit is managed by the Chair holder.

Core Activities

Research

Over the years, Professor Masciandaro's research has focused on a number of different areas. The major innovation in the establishment of the Intesa Sanpaolo Chair in Economics of Financial Regulation has been to promote the progressive implementation of both research and teaching on the analysis of the macroeconomic effects of public choices in the monetary, supervisory and regulatory markets, using both traditional and innovative tools. In this regard, the Chair's current line of research includes experimental analysis of the consequences of new monetary technologies, the role of gender, the influence of psychological and behavioral biases in the formation of monetary policy decisions, as well as the role of populism, economic policies and central banks. In addition, research is dedicated to exploring how regulatory and supervisory models can address the issue of financial integrity, for example to prevent and combat the threat of money laundering nationally and internationally.
