Cattedra Fondazione Romeo ed Enrica Invernizzi in Computer Science

Chair Holder Luca Trevisan

Trevisan

Luca Trevisan is a professor of Computer Science at Bocconi University. Luca received his Ph.D. in 1997, from Sapienza University in Rome, working alongside Pierluigi Crescenzi. After graduation, Luca was a postdoc at MIT and DIMACS, and he taught at Columbia University, U.C. Berkeley and Stanford University, before returning to Berkeley in 2014 and finally to Italy in 2019.

Luca's research examines the field of theoretical Computer Science, with a focus on computational complexity, algorithm analysis, foundations of cryptography, and topics between theoretical computer science and pure mathematics.

Luca is a Fellow of the ACM. He received the 2000 Oberwolfach Prize, the 2000 Sloan Fellowship and an NSF CAREER Award. He was invited to the 2006 International Congress of Mathematicians. In 2019 he received an ERC Advanced Grant. He is currently serving a five-year term on the committee that awards the Turing Prize. He is also member of the Italian National Academy of Sciences.

Joint Purpose

Nowadays, it is often mentioned how technologies have changed the way information is transmitted and, consequently, also the way democracy and contemporary societies function.

These are interesting topics for the social sciences, historically associated with Bocconi. Thus, the extensive study of computer science is relevant to all fields, and it will require different and new skills that must be developed, so that the young men and women will be able to approach this future with confidence and awareness.

The establishment of the Chair in Computer Science, in collaboration with the Invernizzi Foundation, constitutes a fundamental new starting point for the multidisciplinary research promoted by Bocconi.

Luca Trevisan
When Computer Science finds a problem it cannot solve, it is not always bad news, especially in the field of cybersecurity. Today's students will face a complex future, they will indeed need IT skills in every area of work and an informed approach to the risks and potential of new technologies

Core Activities

Research

Computer science can be a tool with many potentials for reaching new technologies. The Chair's research activities will focus on understanding what lies behind such technological achievements. Through its teaching activities, the Chair will raise students' awareness on all aspects of learning, from the technical to the ethical. The Chair focuses on specific areas, such as: the analysis of networks where pairs of users and objects communicate and interact, and the topic related to all applications where data security is addressed (transactions, blockchain, cryptocurrencies, digital signatures)

Students

Professor Luca Trevisan's rigorous research activities will also be supported by a significant teaching activity, as part of the courses taught by the Professor. These students will thus have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and develop new skills in the field of Computer Science.

Dissemination

In the coming years, the Chair's activities will be further enhanced with the dissemination of Prof. Trevisan's research results through the participation in seminars and conferences organized by the most prestigious academic and institutional entities.
