Joint Purpose

In 2018, Bocconi University and the Fondazione Achille and Giulia Boroli  committed to further strengthening their longstanding relationship in the form of a Strategic Partnership, which led to funding the Achille and Giulia Boroli Chair in European Studies assigned to Professor Gianmarco Ottaviano.

The Chair combines a strong commitment to scientific research with dissemination and training aimed especially at the young people who will become future European citizens.

Gianmarco Ottaviano
Through the Boroli Chair, thanks to the Foundation’s support, Bocconi is developing an ambitious project for critical analysis of European issues, which involves students, faculty, researchers, institutions and civil society in an integrated and interactive way.

Andrea Boroli
A common experience and a more than ten-year collaboration with Bocconi and the people who lead it have led us to build a deeper, more constant and lasting relationship, through the establishment of the Chair in European Studies. We are certain that the research, teaching and training carried out at this University will contribute to strengthening that European ideal that we share with Bocconi and which was at the basis of my father's thinking and choices.

Core Activities

Research

The Boroli Chair in European Studies’ research is dedicated to the cost-benefit analysis of a European Union composed of Member States, touching on four main themes: European integration versus a renewed trend towards nationalism; single market and globalization in the era of neo-protectionism; immigration and sustainability of the European economic model; and economic development and inequalities in the new European economic geography.

The main research projects are MIMAT and MicroProd, funded by the ERC. In addition to these, these are numerous other projects that are the part of the Chair's activities, including Projects of Relevant National Interest (PRIN) funded by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research.

Students

The Chair’s activities include several initiatives aimed at students:

  • High schools. Because of the fundamental role that the new generations play on the chessboard of sustainable development and progress, the Chair organizes initiatives and activities aimed at increasing high school students’ awareness and knowledge of European issues, to raise their critical sense and understanding of being citizens of a free and open Europe. These include the #GenerazioneEU project in collaboration with Repubblica and the Italian Representation of the European Commission and the Office in Italy of the European Parliament.

  • Bocconi students. Through activities organized by the Employer Relations Office, knowledge of European Institutions is promoted by allowing students and graduates to meet representatives of European Institutions and International Organizations based in Europe, in order to support them as they start their professional career. In addition, graduation awards are allocated every year, reserved for graduates of Bocconi Master of Science programs with a final grade of 110/110 cum laude with a thesis on Europe or the European Union.

Communication and Dissemination

The Boroli Chair in European Studies’ activities have been enriched by the dissemination of research results by Professor Ottviano and Professor Altomonte, thanks to their participation in seminars and conferences organized by prestigious academic and institutional entities, as well as the organization of workshops and events for the scientific community. Europe Day is an annual appointment: a large-scale event that aims to address the main issues of the European debate, aimed at both students and a wider audience.
