Carlo Messina
Managing Director and CEO, Intesa Sanpaolo

ISPThe collaboration with Intesa Sanpaolo, an international Italian banking group and historic partner and supporter of Bocconi, began in 2006. In 2008 the Bank became a Strategic Partner of the University and in 2019 it further intensified this link by transforming the Intesa Sanpaolo Chair in Economics of Financial Regulation from a fixed-term to an endowed Chair, assigned to Donato Masciandaro, Full Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of Economics. The Chair’s research activities, whose focus is on central banking regimes and supervisory systems, are deeply intertwined with the initiatives of the BAFFI CAREFIN Center for Applied Research on International Markets, Banking, Finance and Regulation, where a a specific research unit - supported by Intesa Sanpaolo and managed by the Chair holder - focuses on issues relating to monetary and financial rules. This academic position active in the field of finance joins a second endowed chair established by Intesa Sanpaolo, the Intesa Sanpaolo Chair in Political Economics. Since 2013, it has been held by Professor Guido Tabellini, Professor of Economics and former Rector of the University. It aims to analyze economic policy, from both a positive and regulatory point of view, with particular attention to issues of economic development in Italy and the Euro area. It focuses on the problems of growth (or lack thereof), concentrating on European institutions and the lessons that can be learned from the financial and economic crisis that is still underway. In addition to being a partner of the Master of Science in Cyber Risk Strategy and Governance, established based on a partnership between Bocconi University and Politecnico di Milano with the aim of developing skills in technology and computer science and understanding their economic and managerial implications, Intesa Sanpaolo also actively supports SUR-Lab  (Sustainable Urban Regeneration). Their mission is to develop and disseminate knowledge on sustainable urban regeneration processes and research how these bring value to both the private sector and society.

Furthermore, as a Strategic Partner, Intesa Sanpaolo is a member of the Partners for Development Program and is actively involved in life at Bocconi through the Development Committee and the Coordination Committee.

Through the creation of a permanent Chair, Intesa Sanpaolo has chosen to donate to the endowment, demonstrating that it places great trust in the University, its mission and its management of resources. The University’s endowment fund is capital that the University invests in the long term generating an annual return, which guarantees the independence and sustainability of Bocconi activities over time.
